Heh...Open source research for cancer not being essential. There's a reason that we have made mad progress in physics over the last half century and far less in the area of curing cancer. Had we made such advances in cancer research we'd be able to cure it as long as we could get the patient into a 0-G environment. :p
More seriously, the entire concept of private research only works when you're actually filing patents for things. Since nobody's discovered what they're looking for, there aren't any patents for curing cancer and thus no information sharing between pharmaceutical companies and the like. I seem to recall a phrase about inventing and wheels that applies here...
(I know, tangential to the topic of the comic, but...)

It's okay - possibly even a good laugh - until they get teeth...
Is that the same baby being carried around in http://www.wastedtalent.ca/comic/stop-asking ? or is it the squid?
It's the squid! The squid was born.

Yay for squidbirth! You draw him very cute... both as a baby and a squid!
