Just don't "persuasion fit" that part.

Indeed. Apply lube instead.

Remember: If it doesn't fit, force it.. if it breaks, it was never meant to be.

At least change the screw placement, it makes me cringe!

Can we assume that the specs call for a hardened material?

The indented slot along the, ah...shaft... suggest some manner of metal to me. Basically it's cutting costs by scooping out a bit of material when the extra strength is not necessary.

There are other reasons to use them since you know which direction the stresses are coming from and can optimize the shape of the member (yes, this is actually the technical term) to counter those stresses with minimum weight. Hence those I shaped beams used in construction. But in the smaller scale stuff where you might actually need a part that looks something like that, odds are you're just getting rid of excess material to safely cut costs. Or you're doing something biological, in which case having a large opening of missing material like that is an indication you really should find something else to use.

As far as strength and the slot is concerned, I hope that the bottom of it is filleted!

I haven't given a lot of thought to semi-erotic machinery design, I must admit. I wonder how far you could go with this?

Ah the nuts and bolts of engineering.

Is it bad that it took me like ten seconds to recognize the shape?

It just means your mind is untainted. Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not go to certain parts of the internet.

You mean like, all of it?
It's more a question of perception than experience or lack thereof I think. Looking at a few dick pictures I haven't seen before isn't going to change the way I look at the world for me and make me involuntarily pay attention to when things are shaped like genitals if I'm thinking about something else.

True. And I have to admit, I didn't catch it until reading the comment about biomimicry, since that put me into the mindset of looking for biological shapes. Despite having a rather thoroughly corrupted mind.

The reason I got it right away was from remembering that old graphic for the band Tool....

Our favorite nutty engineer makes a part that looks like a shaft n' balls...

Therefore, the nut made some nuts!

Definitely make sure you screw it hard enough to have a tight hold.
