Sometimes I think his approach isn't a bad one, although I'm not adept enough to pull it off very often. Sometimes treating that stuff casually is the only way to get anyone to relax about it. Women often seem permanently shot full of insecurities about their looks, and frankly reassurance doesn't do all that much good sometimes.
Don't shoot me, but I wish women would just relax about their looks. 'OMG! I have to look good!' Very few people look noticably better because of that feeling. Just relax, people.

I got my mom with something similar once. I commented how I had great role models who taught me right from wrong and did their best to bring me up right. She started to thank me for the compliment when I quipped, "You should meet them sometime..."
