Ingenious, I love it! I have to keep that in mind. Thanks for brightening my morning Jam :D

At my office we use Nerf guns :D

We use pom pons in my office. Each of us has a cup of them for either attention-getting or general mayhem.

I usually throw something suitably harmless at someone, like an eraser. Or I sneak up behind them and clap right next to their ears.

WQhen in doubt, be loud and noisy until you get their attention. Best way in that case, is to call them various things while throwing "Hey!" between each call.

You engineers must have much better tape measures than I. My consumer-grade Stanley Galaxie can't even span one meter like that!
I don't work in an open-plan office so the point is moot for me, but if I ever do again in the future, maybe a laser pointer would be the right tool for this particular job.

I recommend that you use a green laser pointer. We measured the power output of a typical one recently, and, er, it's rather greater than they claim... I would have thought that any laser pointer that happily bursts balloons would get some attention pretty soon if pointed at the back of somebody's neck!

I always bought the Husky brand..cheaper than Stanleys, but much better for construction purposes, so they take a pretty good beating without kinking, and are perfect for this.
Thanks for the idea!

What, you don't have a universal chat system you can use to write "ping"? ;-)
Either that, or nerf guns.

I'm thinking about this cool Star Trek TNG's communicator badge. Maybe something similar with that but for your team in the office. An electronic badge with LED lamps with various colours. When you press a certain button a lamp on the target will lit up with a sound. The lamp colour will indicate who want to talk with you.

Perfect for a small team of five or six (or as many the lamp colours can provide). Don't blame me when people start fighting on who will be Mr Red or Mr White.

Wait, why do I need to type it here when I can patent this thing, manufacture it and sell it on my own? Mrs Angela, please delete my above comment!

Kind of complex solution that means buying a toy system that probably wouldn't be used, anyhow, isn't it? Most companies concerned enough to invest anything into such an issue would probably choose a uniform chat program, as was suggested by another poster (even customer service offices use this method).

But I could see it as a fun little project for non-professional applications. For instance, as a hunter, I never go into the field alone (in case of injuries, you would never believe how many hunters die every year over stupid stuff like not tying off to their stand, and being immobilized or killed by a fall), but use of radios, even with a headset makes noise the critters can hear...rigging an offshoot from one with color-coded LED "signals" could be very useful, since hunting is often done outside cell range, so even texting isn't available. Look for those sorts of applications, and it sounds like it might have potential.

You just gave me a very interesting idea. Thank you good sir!

No problem. I'd love to see something along those lines on market. if you were to take the time to design one that can run through the headphone jacks on standard short-to-medium range radio sets, it'd be choice, as that would allow people using old school field GPS/radio hybrid units to use them just as well as people on plain old field walkie-talkies.

And now you have ME thinking...hunters often use the GPS/radio hybrid setups, and they communicate well enough to track each-other (though I never wondered whether they do this via the satellites, or if they use the GPS satellites to locate, and communicate the location to each-other via radio. Going to have to look into that), I have to wonder how hard it would be to set up a keyboard attachment setup, and if it would work as well. Field GPS/Text unit!

Filed GPS unit.... with small keyboard....

Make it an armband.

You will make a real Pipboy!

Note: If you don't know what a Pipboy is it's an armband with computer on it from the game Fallout 3.

That was actually the direction I was thinking...with hunting/outdoors gear, the more of it you wear as clothing style equipment, the less you're likely to drop out of a pouch or pocket and lose.

Am I the only one who noticed that the tape in that tape measure is upside down? Unless you have fancy upside down tape measures in Canada.
