Yay, death of the internets, I know I'm doing my part. Of course with comcast being as restrictive as they are I can't do my part so well. I kinda wonder how the world would take the internets dying.
Yeah, the latest discover has an article about a guy who wants to change the way we send data to prevent this. I don't remember the details exactly, but it has something to do with lost packets.
I'm sure that report was completely fabricated by the various ISPs who want to use it as an excuse to limit/control bandwidth by charging content providers extra. I find todays comic and the report particularly interesting because it seems to touch lightly on net neutrality, a topic I started doing an essay on a while ago and still have yet to finish, it's a pretty messy issue from what I've experienced. But yeah this issue of "brownouts" would really only be in the US, possibly a few other countries like Canada and Mexico? I don't really know what their current advancements are on faster network cables, but from what I've read so far most of the other countries are ahead of the US who is placing 16th in internet advancement. Korea and Japan seem to already have fiber optic cables installed and probably a few European countries as well. But my point is most of the world doesn't have to worry about this if it's actually a valid fear, which I highly doubt.
Net Neutrality scares the crap out of me. The fact that the internet is very different in, say, China, makes me very sad. One of my favourite aspects of the internet is that you can easily meet and talk to people from all over the world and share points of view. You don't have to be a giant in the industry to have your 'product' accessible to a global audience, like you would if you had a 'real' product.
The internet, to me, is like its own country. I want it to stay free...
Yeah, most small, Asian places (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc) have ridiculously good telecommunications infrastructure. It makes me jealous constantly, since not only is their service easily 2-10 times better than our's, they're also anywhere from 2-3 times cheaper... :\
Really, this would only be a problem with really big countries (Canada, USA).
But God I hope it's just an imaginary problem.
Hee, today's xkcd is related. In the alt text particularly.
Jay, don't take this personally, but I hate your name, or rather your screen name, I keep thinking it says "Jam" X_X
And yeah, telecoms are actually over charging us too, the government originally put a cap on how much they could charge but removed it because they promised fiber optic cables, they also got several tax exemptions for it, and yet only a very few areas in a few cities in a few states have seen fiber optic. The ebook I got and am reading for my essay estimates over $200 billion was given to telecoms with the promise of fiber optics.
Jam: Well I hope you never have to do the research I did then, I really started getting pulled to the other side for a bit till I got a bit deeper and applied some cold sense to it. I'm sure there's a lot more I can get on it though, but basically net neutrality is good and so a net neutrality law does need to be passed, BUT it has its risks. But it's needed since the FCC decided to no longer classify the internet as a telecommunications service.
Heh, don't blame Jay, usually my username is "Spike"
My father does his part in breaking the internets, we (my siblings and I) say he suffers from compulsive downloading dissorder (CDD), to him the joy is in downloading whatever, most of the time he doesn't even use/watch/listen to whatever he downloads...
I just suddenly got a funny idea in my head. I know nothing about programming, yet, I eventually plan to minor in it (C++ class was fun) but I wonder if one could write a program that basically makes the HD think it's a bigger file than it actually is and make one that basically gives an infinite number and post a link to download it and name it "Internet" >w< "What are you downloading?" "The INTERNET!!!!!"

Hehe, yeah downloading things then not watching them, I did that over my school's DC++ network because it was fast and easy, I think I'm at about 1.5TB of stuff, maybe a bit more, I know I'm kinda a packrat when it comes to media files. Nowadays though, whatever I download I usually watch.

The trick is to start remembering people by their avatars.
I don't think Angela changes hers often, and mine will probably stay like this for a while.
Plus, she doesn't like using banner images in her signature.

Sorry if what I said bugged you though, not sure if it's just in my head (usually is) but I read your post as a bit irritated, didn't mean to offend or anything, sorry.
Well, I likes my internets all un-broken, but if I had I pic of the comic (easily obtained) I could replace Trevor's face with my own (not that I would) and it would be sad but true

Pretty sure it'd be possible, actually! Man, now I have to try this sometime.

Doesn't take programming... on a *NIX box, you can do something like:
ln -s /dev/urandom TEH_INTERNET
... it would probably have about the same information/garbage ratio as the actual internet :-P
I find it incredibly awexome that your hood has cat ears on it.
*jealous*

I like it, too :D
Wow, one of my friends and I were actually discussing a similar issue the other day, specifically that the junk / useful data ratio on the internet might well be changing faster than search engine technology can deal with it, resulting in the search engines themselves requiring more time and bandwidth to run their query. Imagine the bandwidth that would require for, say, a world-day's worth of Google searches.

Brett: homestar runner! w00t!
Neko Jammies: w00t!
intartubes: cl0gg3d! XD
ne1 like the IT crowd? "dont type google into google" XD
this is amazing.
I love the cat hoodie.
i totally agree. the hoodie is "Teh Awesomeness"
Yes! I wanna Kitty hoodie too! 83 Ugh. I hate Bit torrents. They must all DIE!!! D8< They kill my computer and my internets!

I want one of those hoodies in mens size, i mostly find them in girls sizes
I dunno how many times you've prolly been asked this but ... .__.
What kind of markers do you use? And where do you get them. The colors are gorgeous.
.... I was /going/ to comment on how I wanted to know where you got your kitty hoodie, but it seems redundant now.
