It's not often that I get the opportunity to do a joke about efficiency! Contrary to the punchline there apparently *is* some good new tech for escalators? It's not my area of focus, exactly, so I'm not very well informed but it's probably something like this (vid). Also I will take any tenous opportunity to repost this, because it is neat: ( 'nother vid )

Tech for escalators.. hmm... several years ago the firm I work for part-time got asked to do an escalator project, and on the face of it it seemed pretty mundane. The idea was that when somebody hit the emergency stop button, rather than stop dead (which they almost can), the idea was to use controlled negative acceleration to bring it to a rather more graceful halt. For a person escalator, that has some obvious advantages from a safety point of view, obviously - you don't fall off! Turned out to be a lot harder to do than anybody initially realised if you wanted accurate control, though. Simply because the slower it's going, the harder it is to get accurate positional accuracy from it, updated in real time (think about it). Got it to work, though - and I'm not saying how, because that's commercially sensitive... but the whole thing was a nightmare. As a result of that, I have to say that I *really* like the musical stairs! They have everything going for them - confusion, collisions, accidents, you name it!
....Wouldn't it be more efficient to stop the escalators and let people walk up or down them? Most people do that anyway.....
They did just stop the escalators at the former shopping mall I work at. People walk up and down them all the time. The half-steps at the top and bottom are the awkward parts.
Mitch Hedberg had something to say about escalators - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEWghREkI6o&feature=related
They save a lot of energy at a mall near me, one of the escalators is almost always broken.
I love the advertisement for... boob insurance?
Nah just regular insurance. You can sell anything with boobs, it seems!
Maybe I should have fitted boobs to my old Land Rover before I sold it - might have got more for it!
You know those annoying redneck testicle things people hang on the underneath back of their cars? One guy who lived near my house had one, and it pissed my mom off so bad she drew a bikini top on them with sharpie. The dude never noticed.
Love the piano stairs. Also fun and energy saving: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4o0ZVeixYU
Haha, if it's escalators like that, they have a couple at the YVR sky train station!
If you're ever bored enough you should go check it out in person hahaha
this is also the logic they went through when they invented the see through fridge, I'm guessing. -_-;
What about this for escalator efficiency: http://thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/wheee-dutch-train-station-installs-sli...
