brand new travelogue, available now at Gumroad
Oh WHAT'S THIS?
So people have been asking me for a long time to make a book collection of Wasted Talent. But guys, it is not that simple!
The foundation of my comic are the University Years. So many of my readers got to know me during that time, and STILL to this day I get emails from students saying that my university comics have helped them cope with the stress, or truly echo their own experiences. For that reason, I knew that if I was going to take Wasted Talent to print, I had to do it right by starting at "the beginning."
So I bit the bullet and did what most artists consider to be a crazy exercise: I redrew old strips.
I redrew about 80 comics (some multi-page), plus a schwack of bonus art and supporting material. From zero to book.
The stories and gags in those older comics were worth all the effort, and I'm so proud to be able to share this book with you now.
SO HERE IT IS!
Black and White and RED.
As I mentioned, all of the strips are redrawn, so technically it is ALL "never before seen" material, although if you've read the whole archives there are of course the stories that you know and love. I chose what I consider to be the "best of" the archives. You can pick up and read this book instead of slogging through the whole archives, and not miss out on any inside jokes or history. This book has the complete picture.
There are also TRUE never before seen strips, that I drew from scratch! Most of these are from my final year of engineering, when I was so engrossed in studying that I drew the comics and never scanned them. So NEW stories you've never read!
There's a ton of cool bonus stuff in this book too: artist commentary about the strips, the best of Red's blog, photos of the real people behind the cartoons (and our real shenanigans!), information on the history and traditions of the UBC Engineers... tons of great stuff!
"ANGELA SHUT UP AND TELL ME WHERE AND WHEN I CAN GET THE BOOK ALREADY"
ANIME EVOLUTION IS NEXT WEEKEND: AUGUST 13-15th
I have a limited number of books that I got express shipped to me here in Vancouver. The rest are slowly making their way down to our distributor in the US. So if you live in Vancouver and you're coming to Anime Evolution, you are one of the lucky few people on the PLANET with the opportunity to get a signed copy from me, DIRECT!
PRE-ORDERS for ARTIST EDITIONS WILL OPEN AT THE SAME TIME: ONLINE AUGUST 13th!
Due to the extremely limited amount of spare time that I have in my possession, I am only offering 200 artist edition books, in two different packages.
ARTIST EDITION - A nice drawing on the inside cover and customized note! Numbered 50-200
EXTREME UNDERWATER BASKET WEAVING EDITION - same nice drawing on the inside cover, numbered 1-50
+ Limited edition 8x10 print of the cover
+ A PERSONALIZED DEGREE CERTIFICATE in extreme underwater basket weaving for you to hang in your cubicle (or wherever!)
I am so bad at Photoshop - forgive me! The degree will be on nice paper and I am trying to figure out how I can get an embossed seal, and the patch will look way cooler than my lame mockup.
I am unable to make any estimates or guarantees about when I will be able to get your artist edition book out the door, but I promise I will work as hard as I can without permanently injuring myself or inducing psychosis. FIRST COME, FIRST DRAWED. **ARTIST EDITIONS SHIP FROM CANADA**
HOWEVER- when you place your order, I'll reply with a FREE pdf ebook copy of the book for your reading pleasure! This way you still get to read the comics FIRST even though you'll have to wait for your dead-tree edition to fly to you by carrier pidgeon. (I've removed the bonus material from the ebook, so you can still be 'surprised' by something when you get the book :) )
When the artist editions are gone, they are GONE! You'll have to wait for:
WASTED TALENT: WE ARE THE ENGINEERS LAUNCH PARTY
SEPTEMBER 18th at the BOULEVARD CAFE!
I am throwing a redonkulous shindig at my favourite cafe on UBC campus: the Boulevard Coffee Co. This cafe is run by alumni, has a remarkable green ethic to their business, GREAT coffee (and hot chocolate! And tea!) AND they are huge supporters of local artists.
VANCOUVER, MARK YOUR CALENDARS: THIS WILL NOT BE ONE TO MISS!
COFFEE! SIGNING! BOOK FOR SALE! SPEECHES! SHENANIGANS!
I'm still coming up with awesome surprises for you at this party but I PROMISE a good time.
On this same date - September 18th - the regular editions will go on sale online. These copies are NOT signed or sketched in, but they ship from the US and will get to you much faster (especially if you live in the US).
SO ANYWAY: to summarize:
