Wait, Canadians use gold pieces for currency?

Hey! I didn't know you read this comic!

I believe g = grams though... as in the post weighs x amount, and so the charge to send it would be y amount... >_>

=p

And here I was hoping for some kind of River City Rumble-esque Vancouver where beating thugs rewards you with gold that you can redeem for sweet new moves...

Well, I mean, the metric system doesn't *preclude* that from happening...

The downsides of living in a country that is still stuck using imperial units! I am assuming that you are from the US, correct? I hope.

Anyway my first comment here! I've been a lurker for a long time and I finally decided to make a post, because of my personal crusade against all non-standard units of measurement!

You wouldn't have liked us as students, then. We got fed up with mixed units, decided that none of the systems were particularly rational, and then decided to invent one of our own. It was (is still) called the PGF system, and the base units are the Pole, the Grain and the Fortnight. MicroFortnights aren't far away from seconds, but it was still a bit weird measuring acceleration due to gravity in Poles per Fortnight squared, for instance - along with some other oddities. But we did gain something from this. We realised that when you get further into the derived units, you can have some problems, especially if you're trying to keep it rational. We fixed all that quite simply though, by inventing the variable constant, which for complicated reasons that I won't go into was called Clan. You could fix all sorts of things with that...

Yes, a few of us still laugh about PGF, even now - 45 years later!

It's self-explanatory! And Google's on form as well. If you put Pole Grain Fortnight into a search, it takes you straight here - second entry! Which also means that nobody else involved has ever thought of mentioning it in public before...

So PGF as in CGS or KMS systems, correct? Pole would be distance - distance between north and south poles (through the earth or across the surface) 10 feet or something similarly arbitrary (the figurative 10 foot pole), or the average height of a person from Poland. Or one of the other half dozen or so possibilities I can think of, or the n possibilities I've not considered. Grain would be weight/mass - a grain of sand, or a grain of a chosen cereal. (The latter is actually a unit in the Imperial side of things - whichever system uses bushels also has grains...it's just such a trivial mass that it's virtually never used.) A fortnight is the most obvious - an obsolete unit of time equal to 2 weeks/14 days.

Actually, the pole (also known as rod or perch) is also an imperial unit, measuring 16½ feet (5½ yard, 198 inches, or perhaps more appropriately 25 links).

... I'm so happy for SI units. :)

Yes, the same as in CGS and KMS. The Pole concerned is the one that's sometimes also referred to as a rod or perch. It wasn't such a daft unit either - read the Wikipedia entry for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_%28unit%29

The Grain is similarly specified, and if you look that up, you'll find that it was more universally used than you might think - and still very much in use, especially if you're into firearms.

As for the Fortnight - it's not quite obsolete either, although to all intents and purposes it is. Take a look at the VMS OS (used on VAX machines, etc). The TIMEPROMPTWAIT variable was specified in microFortnights...

Alas, there are other unit systems that work on a similar basis as ours (although I think ours is probably older). The most notable is Furlong/Firkin/Fortnight (FFF), I think. There's a list of some them in Wikipedia, and many of them really are quite strange.

That said, I really hope she wasn't pleased that the Post Office was charging her exactly 100 Loonies. $100 for shipping is bad enough, but having to supply said funds solely with $1 coins?
