Viktor Asks:

Will a year's worth of classes in economics/business do me any good later in my work as an engineer?

Ask an Engineer - Engineering Personality Traits

Fiona asks:

Hi, I'm a high school student who's been strongly considering engineering as a career path. I've heard for awhile now that there are certain personality characteristics that most engineers have. What would you consider these personality characteristics to be, for engineering in general and for your specific field of engineering? Thank you in advance!

Ask an Engineer: What's the Flavour of the Month for you?

This month’s question is actually from panel member Jim! His response, usually first, will be last this month for that reason :)

What's the "Flavour of the Month" in your organization? -- Jim

Corporate Slang Glossary:

“Flavour of the Month” (FOTM): Launched with great fanfare, management declares that everyone shall focus on this urgent new priority until… you don’t anymore!

Ask an Engineer: To Grad School or Not to Grad School?

This month’s question is actually a combination of two different emails that I received about the same time. Figured it would make a good question to pose to the panel! The gist of the question is below:

Ask an Engineer: Fix the World!

Kayla asks:
Q: If you--the major problem-solvers out there--could chose any major world problem to fix what would it be? You can choose anyone to work with, no time limits or budget constraints. Actual PLANS to fix these problems need not be included. I just want to know what you engineers think are the biggest and most worthwhile problems out there in the world that you'd like to wrangle if given free reign! :)

Ask an Engineer! ESCAPE from CUBICLE HELL!

Brittany asks:

I’m a MechE student, and I love it - even the homework that makes you stay up all night.  Unfortunately, I have despised the two engineering companies I've co-oped with.  I love school, but I hate the corporate environment.  Is there anywhere I can still be an engineer, but get out of the horrible cubiclefarms?

Ask an Engineer! What inspires you?

Neil asks:

Who (or what) inspires you as an engineer?

…you actually stumped a few of us with that question, Neil!

Many of our previous questions have demonstrated the breadth of engineering as a discipline, but I think this month’s question has finally revealed what we all have in common. “Just give us an interesting problem to solve and we’ll be happy.”

Zroya asks via email:

"What are your "Ten Commandments" of engineering? Infinite honorable mention positions are allowed. :-)"

We got so many amazing volunteers for our Ask an Engineer panel; from all disciplines and industries, all around the world! I’m amazed and honoured, so thank you to everyone who wrote in.
