What I really can't believe is anyone taking a kid to the beech and making him dress in long pants and sleeves. Nevermind his minuscule age, wearing such clothing on a beach in summer is just...odd.

It's a swimsuit! It's designed to prevent sunburn. I often wear a long sleeved sun shirt to the beach, too!

True, and avoiding sunburn (and its resultant possible effects down the road in skin cancer) is admirable, but isn't that why the Flying Spaghetti Monster gave us sunscreen?

Have you ever tried slathering sunscreen on a wiggly toddler?

Actually, no, so I'll concede the point.

no, it's not odd. sunscreen needs to be re-applied every 30 minutes, especially after swimming or rolling around in sand, as 2 year olds do. these swimsuits (http://www.nozone.ca/) block the sun more effectively and are made from moisture wicking fabric to keep them cool. since most cases of skin cancer are the result of burns that happen before adulthood (~21 years), these suits are actually quite common.

sincerely,

We bought one of these for our daughter when we vacation in Mexico. We go every year and she has never burned. She never leaves the water so it is not too hot. I also have a shirt like that. I am pushing fifty and can get away with it. My wife bought them for both of us after seeing the Canadians all had them.

I find it odd too, but I'm pretty sure that summer in Vancouver lacks what for me is the definition of summer: +30C days.

For me, summer means +100F days. Early winter is about 30C, late winter makes it down to the range of 70F-75F. Confused by the temperature measurements? Don't be! Convert them all to Rand.

The kid looks like the saddest kid to wear a cute outfit.

Could somebody please explain to me what the attraction of sitting on a beach is at all? I can't think of anything at all to commend it to anybody, especially in burning heat. When I was forced to do this as a child, I got bored and started to dig large holes in the beach, and that didn't make me very popular at all - but the results were quite amusing!

The attraction is primarily the company, but also it's cooler by the water than in the city.

Okay, I get the 'cooler than the city' bit. It's just that whenever I've been anywhere near beaches in this weather, they've always seemed hotter, especially when the tide's a mile out. Possibly a lack of wind, whatever. But the rest of it - meet up with the family ON THE BEACH???? - sort-of fills me with dread, I'm afraid. Too many bad experiences as a child. I gather it's nowhere near as bad for others, though. But hey, whatever floats your boat...

My fiancé (who's Floridian) managed to get a pretty bad sunburn in Quebec a couple days ago. Where there is sun, any burn is possible. Remember that people XD (he lost his Floridian card, though. He should have known better XD)

I'm from Scotland and have super duper pale skin. As a child I had to wear a T-Shirt out in the sun and on occasion, was burned through it. I also recently got burned through a black swimming suit here in Georgia. Can totally understand the point of the full cover up swim suit!!! Also, kids burn much easier than adults!
