Polar Bears

Hey, at least you have open water. In Minnesota, we have the Polar Bear Plunge, where we remove a large square of ice from the surface of the water, and then dunk ourselves in it.

... yeah.

Wouldn't that induce a heart attack? (Like... seriously?) Also, how do you get back out!?  Ice rarely forms in Vancouver, we were doing the best with the Ocean we have. It was frosty, though!

Well ... it works. See, we usually have a pretty thick layer of ice, so they just essentially set up a dunking site out on the middle of a lake. Cut a square out, have a ladder hung over the side, people dunk themselves, then they climb back out! It should also be said that we are all extremely adapted to the cold, so we can do crazy stuff like that. If I'm around for it next year, I'll probably take part ...

In Finland, "Ice swimming" is, well, if not commonplace, at least commonly known and accepted. It is also very eagerly done by some. Generally it's just swimming in a hole sawed/drilled in water ice, like thus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_swimming . Us Finns usually do it straight from the sauna, so the aggregate temp difference is from about 70-100°C in the sauna, through the minus 10-30°C air outside to the water at °0C (or a little bit less), and then back to the sauna again :)

It is not recommended for people with known heart issues, but there is scientific research on the health benefits of ice swimming. You're heartily welcome here to try it :)

...except the water in Vancouver would be colder.  Fresh water can only get near freezing before it freezes solid, but salt water can get colder.  Although once you get out, the air is probably colder in Minnesota than in Vancouver :P

Same for wisconsin, Ben.

But now I'm in florida, wondering when it's going to get cold.

Never, Justin. Never. I grew up in Florida, and I think its cold when it drops below 50.  Hence, I think anyone who does this is CRAAAAZY!!

I've been polar bearing and it's something that I'm so thankful I did! Not many people have done it and it's always fun to say you have! And other than the feeling of your heart stopping midway--it's great!

My school does something similar except it's jumping into the school pond in Feburary wearing the strangest outfits you can to raise money (so not much like it at all actually, but it still involves cold water!).

"It'd probably be more sadistic to just subject Colin to the rest of his Bucket List (which includes being thrown out of a bar... through the front window)."

You're sending him to bug Charles Barkley?

I polar bear dipped several years ago (we got hot chocolate for participating, but I probably would have done it for bragging rights). You just gasp like someone with breathing trouble, but you can breathe fine. The most unnerving part is the way your limbs suddenly refuse to respond correctly; you can swim out, but it's harder.
