In the interest of helping newbs who can't post threads (sorry, see ATTN newbs and bots thread) I have made this topic!

  • Introduce yourself! Who is you? Where you be? What you like?

    And then...[/*:m]

  • Say whatever! Something on your mind? Offtopic rant? Comment about the weather? WHATEVER! (just, please try to keep away from mindless spam. I know it's a fine distinction.)

    Also...[/*:m]

  • Regs are free to jibba jabba in this thread as well! Post retarded movies! Complain about the stock market? Call profs douchebags. It really makes no difference to me, I just want to help REAL people get their postcounts up :)

    Lastly[/*:m]

  • Welcome to Wasted Time![/*:m]

hey everybody!

been a while since i've posted. hope you're doing ok without me :P

@Jam & Red, are either of you two going to Red Knight? I was thinking about coming to it since there are so many people from UBC that I haven't seen in so long.

cheers!

Because of your lack of communication, I have declared you legally dead. If you wish to repeal the toe-tag, you will need to apply in person. Red Knight would be a good time to do so.

Yeah, I'll probably go to Red Knight. Why not.

Answering questions in order:

- I am a UBC engineering student- but I won't use my name because the feeling of anominity makes it easier to write. However, someone will eventually be able to guess my identity, which doesn't bother me because I view that as a game of sorts.

- You (Jam) seem to feel that your life is boring, but in comparison to mine (and presumably, other people as well) it is interesting. You at least have a core group of friends and some extra-curricular interests.

Semi-random ranting:

Hourly comic day, 8:16 pm. I saw about 5 minutes of the "Beauty and the Geek" TV show before I really started to hate the stereotypes. Mostly, the women acted like they were ignorant. I won't say that they were, because they could be acting. I doubt that I would enjoy a gender-reversed version either, mostly because I also don't like the stupid-male-stereotype and related behaviour. Smart CAN be sexy, though, or at least attractive. People who are intelligent enough to be a physics grad student, or other science or engineering subject, are less common than physically attractive people. People who are both physically attractive and able to hold an intellectual conversation are rarer still. Rarity is known to increase attractiveness, which is why some people change their appearance to stand out.

The weather:
-Foggy today in [city in greater vancouver].

Time wasted:
- I took about an hour to write this.

Welcome aboard!

So....another UBC Engineer in our midst. Shall we decide this Clue-style or through 20 Questions?

And if your faculty is Mech, you should come out to E-Week. If your faculty isn't Mech, still come out, but don't do too well. I'm not actually saying that I'll support you if you sabotage your discipline, but then again, I'm not not saying it.

I don't think my life is boring. My day to day life might be boring sometimes, but overall I am satisfied with my life. Difficult at times, yes, but that's what life is. Everyone's life, in my opinion, is equally interesting or equally boring depending on how it is portrayed.

That's a nice outlook at things. For example, if I (presumably) could draw and thus graphically displayed my life at the time of high school, it would seem to be more interesting than it is now. Oh, the drama.

I think that anyone's day to day life on paper would look boring. I know that I won't be keeping a record of my daily exploits for that exact reason.

Even if you take a phenomenally interesting life, the individual days would seem mundane. For example, here is an exerpt from Winston Churchhill's diary. I bought it on eBay.

Tuesday, March 23rd - Today I woke up to the sound of the neighbor's dog barking. Seriously, that thing needs to go. But nonetheless, now that I am up, it's time to decide which type of tea to have with my breakfast crumpets.

Earl Grey. Just like every day.

Heh. Yeah, a reason why I do not keep a journal. For example, my thoughts on a day a couple weeks ago ran like this:

This Monday I woke up and grabbed the Star Ledger as I usually do, and read the comics first, then at the gloom and doom of what is going on outside my little bubble. Heh, that Dilbert... Anyway, I was flipping through when I came to the death notices. I scanned to see if anyone famous had died, but then my eyes alighted on a fmailiar face. Carlee Wines had died! WTF? At Conencticut University? Car crash? Holy crap, she was in my bio class. Man, we never really hit it off on the right foot, but this is completely unexpected. I wonder how her boyfriend is coping with it. Man, that's just too bad. Ah well, on to my class.

My dad is thinking of writing a daily journal in the style of a 17th century englishman.

"Op be times! And, off to Strausburg!"

I don't have the patience for journals. The only time I write in my livejournal is when I have something to vent XD or announce.

I'm keeping an E-Week journal. But the mental/physical/drinking strain of this week is causing the writing to be almost emo.

So far, the highlight is the 5 minute discussion in Latin. I hope I captured the awesomeness of that.

Angie's life story is stranger than almost anyone's. She has duel citizenship, but neither one is from the country she was born in, or the country that owned the area she was born in. Then she moved about 53 times in a couple years, and finally *settled* in Vancouver.

Somewhere along the way, I think she lived in MIR for a couple months.

"settled" for the time being. I'm sure I'll get sick of Vancouver eventually. I'd like to live in Europe...

I've heard of people who spent their entire life living in one city, and saw nothing wrong with it. I think that is kind of sad - what about you?

What is it like to be a frequent traveller? Did a particular place feel more like "home" than any other? Do you identify more with a particular nationality, or with the freedom to go anywhere?

I don't see anything wrong with living in one city your whole life, in fact sometimes I'm jealous of people who have "roots" like that. However, I do think it is a loss if they never TRAVEL.

Being a place-shifter isn't so bad. I think it gave me a more rounded view of the world. I'm "from" nowhere, but I kind of view everywhere I've been as home, in a way. Home is where I am for now.

I disagree. "Home" is where you feel that you will return to. I can't call Vancouver home, and neither can I call Fruitvale that. Referring to either as such feels as akward as petting a tamed goose.

While I see a lot of good coming from moving to different cities, I see the downside of a transient lifestyle. I want an address that won't change twice a year. I want a phone number that is constant. I want some stability.

Instability ain't so bad for me. Speaking as someone who willingly lived as the transient variety of homeless bum for a year, I've got to say, that was a lot more fun than living a respectable lifestyle. No bills, no rent, no obligations. Just get enough money for food, invest in a nice backpack tent, and mooch off friends for a place to sleep, and you're a free man. Now I have a car and an apartment and a career and a 360 and a laptop and bleh. If I wasn't hopelessly in love with my girlfriend, and hopelessly addicted to X-Box Live, I'd be just fine not knowing where I was going to wake up tomorrow.
